Women’s Fashion in the 1740s: In the 1740s, women’s fashion continued to evolve with distinct trends and styles. The robe à la française, a popular gown style of the time, featured a tight bodice, low-cut square neckline, wide panniers, and lavish trimmings of lace, ribbon, and flowers. This gown was often made from lighter fabrics like Indian cotton, silks, and damasks in pastel shades. Another style, the robe à la ’anglaise, had a snug bodice with a full skirt worn without panniers. Sleeves were bell- or trumpet-shaped and caught up at the elbow to reveal frilled or lace-trimmed sleeves underneath. Necklines became deeper over time, allowing for more ornamentation around the neck area. Women also wore stays that gave them an erect posture with a high bosom and small domed hoops called panniers under their skirts. Suvi Sholberg
