Coral reefs can be seen from space, but they are made by one of the world’s simplest animals - some no bigger than the head of a pin. Incredible! Healthy Coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse and economically valuable ecosystems on earth, providing valuable and vital ecosystem services. Coral ecosystems are a source of food for millions; protect coastlines from storms and erosion; provide habitat, spawning and nursery grounds for economically important fish species; provide jobs and income to local economies from fishing, recreation, and tourism; are a source of new medicines, and are hotspots of marine biodiversity Scientists and biologists actually called starfishes as keystone species in marine biology. This is because the number and the presence of starfishes in the oceans can greatly affect other animals and creatures in the sea. Several studies have been conducted where starfishes are voluntarily removed from an area of the ocean. The results were shocking since opportunist creatures such as mussels have threatened marine life by increasing in number so drastically in just a short span of time. Starfishes are general predators and this means a lot of its species can eat whatever they want as long as they can catch it. The wide range of prey that starfishes can eat is one of the reasons why it is helpful in creating balance in marine biodiversity.
