‘Grotto’ is design based on the arrangements of shells to make abstract wall decoration. Wither term ‘rococo’ , actually derives from the popularity of these shell follies (from the French for shell, ‘rocaille’ ) . Grottoes were a popular feature of stately homes on the high Baroque period in the 18th century inspiring a new school of decorative arts which employ swirling motifs based loosely on the forms of bizarre shells and the fins and scales of monstrous sea creatures.
