Crinoids are an ancient sea creature that still exists in oceans today. They are closely related to starfish, sea urchins, and sand dollars. Early crinoids live in shallow warm waters. Juveniles attached to the sea bottom or floating debris and broke free, loosing their stems, as adults to travel where the ocean currents took them. Crinoids nearly went extinct during the Permian extinction. Modern crinoids live in shallow and deep ocean water and have evolved to use their arms to swim and crawl. Most crinoid fossils found in Wisconsin are portions of stem columnals.
